Gary Sandefur, Dean of the College of Letters & Science
Dean Sandefur's responsibilities include policy development, academic program review, strategic planning, resource development and allocation, faculty recruitment and retention and fundraising.
The dean works closely with the departments and programs of Letters & Science to carry out our strategic priorities in advancing undergraduate and graduation education, research and public service.
Prior to accepting the position of Dean of the College of Letters and Sciences in 2004, Gary Sandefur was a professor in Sociology.

Rebecca Stillman, Financial Specialist 2
Rebecca is a go-to support person for all of L&S Administration. Her job duties include managing the mailroom; coordinating SWAP and other building related work orders; ordering office supplies and furniture and tracking those expenses for South Hall offices; working with MIS to ensure that technology needs are met. She also assists Chris Bruhn and John Varda with their accounting needs.

Nancy Westphal-Johnson, Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Undergraduate Education
Nancy is the Chief of Staff for the Dean, assisting with special projects and day-to-day management of L&S Administration. Nancy also oversees instructional budgets (TAs, short-term staffing, credit outreach, summer sessions, etc) and manages course access for the College. She is a representative on many college and campus committees.

Maria Cancian, Associate Dean for the Social Sciences; Fiscal Initiatives
Maria is a professor of Public Affairs and Social Work and affiliate of the Institute for Research on Poverty. In her part-time role as Associate Dean, she oversees all of the policy and budgetary matters in Social Science Departments, associated research centers, and the Area Studies Centers.

Bruno Browning, L&S Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Bruno is the College's first Chief Information Officer. As such, he chairs the College's Information Technology Committee and coordinates on information technology issues with campus and within the College. Bruno is also the Director of L&S Learning Support Services.

Christopher Bruhn, Assistant Dean for Facilities and Space Assignments
Chris is the facilities director in L&S. He oversees all aspects of the College’s buildings; including remodeling of instructional and research space, space allocation, safety concerns, and capital budget planning. He coordinates the L&S Facilities Committee and represents L&S on various campus level facilities committees.

Elaine Klein, Assistant Dean for Academic Planning; Program Reviews and Assessment; Director of General Education
Elaine works with the Academic Planning Council, L&S Senate, L&S Curriculum Committee, and others to support academic and curricular administration in the college. She consults with departments and programs about planning and changing academic programs, assessing student learning, and related efforts. She is also the Chair of the University General Education program, and often serves as the dean’s liaison to other schools/colleges on programmatic issues.

Lucy Mathiak, Assistant Dean and Special Assistant for Internal Communications
Lucy works closely with the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Administration, and other members of Letters & Science administration to produce documents, reports, presentations, and other materials to help Letters & Science staff and UW-Madison colleagues to understand the college, its challenges, and its achievements. She researches, edits, and produces a biennial report documenting college activity and points of pride. She also manages the awarding of posthumous degrees on behalf of the Dean.

Megan Costello, Director of Communications
As part of the Advancement Team, Megan works closely with the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the UW Foundation on development and alumni relationship building. She also consults with departments on their outreach and alumni relations efforts.
Megan works with the L&S Board of Visitors, emeriti professor breakfasts, homecoming and commencement, and is also responsible for L&S social media.

Mary Ellen Gabriel, Communications Specialist
Mary Ellen produces content targeted at our alumni, donors and friends that shows the breadth and impact of donor support, corporate and foundation gifts and the overall impact the liberal arts. In addition, Mary Ellen currently has a 40% position in the Center for Humanities as the Marketing & Outreach Manager.

Diane Pladziewicz, Senior Accountant
Diane is a member of the L&S Budget Office. She is directly involved in all aspects of the annual budget process for unclassified and non-salary budgets. She coordinates all Fund 101, 104 and 402 budget transfers within the College as well as budget transfers between L&S and other divisions and campus transfers, which includes managing the carryover of prior year Fund 101 balances and generation of reports summarizing budget transfer activity.
Diane is also directly involved in building the salary detail used for the summer sessions budget and payroll. She serves as a resource for reconciliation of expenditures, particularly those involving Fund 101 salaries.

John Varda, Senior Accountant
John has a joint affiliation with the Business Office and the Office for Budget Planning and Analysis. He does all of the accounting for gift funds in the College, and is the liaison between the consultant for the departments, College and UW Foundation for those accounts. He also is the post-award accountant with oversight over all L&S federal and non-federal accounts, working with RSP and department representatives to resolve overdrafts and other issues, including effort reporting, cost share, and close outs.

Susan Ellis Weismer, Associate Dean for Research Services
Susan is a professor in Communicative Disorders, affiliate faculty in Psychology and Educational Psychology, and a principal investigator at the Waisman Center. In her role as associate dean she oversees all of the research related policies and activities for the College. This includes the Institutional Research Boards (IRBs), the grant process, animal care, technology transfer, and inter-institutional research agreements. She is also the faculty director for the Advancement Opportunity Fellows (AOF) and the L&S Community of Graduate Research Scholars (CGRS).

Technology Transfer and Animal Research
Bill Barker, Associate Dean for Technology Transfer
Bill manages the campus-level requirements for the research enterprise in L&S by working in coordination with the Graduate School, WARF, Legal Services and other campus units and affiliates in areas involving conflict of interest, intellectual property, technology transfer, etc. His position in L&S is currently 50% because he is also serving as Interim Director of the Office of Industrial Contracting for the Graduate School.

Kurt Stephenson, Administrative Program Specialist
Kurt directs the L&S Animal Research Program. This includes inspections and upkeep of the animal facilities in the College, supervising husbandry staff, working with labor groups, animal protocol consultation, standard operating procedure development, L&S Animal Care and Use Committee participation, training, facilities planning, animal health surveillance, occupational health and safety coordination, and making sure that L&S facilities follow and stay up to code on Federal regulations. Kurt is also a parking coordinator for the college.

Program Review and Assessment
Elaine Klein, Assistant Dean for Academic Planning; Program Reviews and Assessment; Director of General Education
Elaine works with the Academic Planning Council, L&S Senate, L&S Curriculum Committee, and others to support academic and curricular administration in the college. She consults with departments and programs about planning and changing academic programs, assessing student learning, and related efforts. She is also the Chair of the University General Education program, and often serves as the dean’s liaison to other schools/colleges on programmatic issues.

Service Learning and Community Based Research
Andrea-Teresa "Tess" Arenas, Director
The Office of Service Learning and Community Based Research (OSLCBR) serves the College of Letters & Science and has college wide partnership with several units including L&S Honors, Research, FIGS, and more. The OSLCBR interprets UW System Administration, campus, College and Morgridge Center policy and ensures that service learning and community based research conforms to the norms and expectations of L&S academic practices. Tess coordinates all efforts of the office; including strategic planning, curricular development for departments, grant selection, administration, budgeting and assessment. Tess teaches service learning courses in Chican@ Latin@ Studies and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.

Brian Bubenzer, Assistant Dean for Teaching and Project Assistant Administration
Brian oversees the overall administration and professional development of teaching and project assistants in the College, as well as coordinating the College and campus award programs for TAs. He is also the administrative director for the Advanced Opportunity Fellowships (AOF) and the L&S Community of Graduate Research Scholars (CGRS).
