Letters
& Science By The Numbers
Letters
& Science Awards and Honors
The
College of Letters & Science is central to academic excellence
at UW-Madison. Constituting around half of the Madison campus,
Letters & Science's 39 departments
and 5 professional schools
cover the spectrum of the humanities and arts, physical sciences
and social sciences, in departments from African Languages and
Literatures to Zoology. With over 50 interdisciplinary
research centers, Letters & Science is uniquely
positioned to confront the major issues of our times.
Among
UW-Madison's 13 schools and colleges, only the College of Letters
& Science touches every undergraduate student. Since most
freshmen and sophomores take their courses in Letters & Science,
we have the unique responsibility of launching UW undergraduates
on their journey of intellectual discovery and lifelong learning.
Whether students decide to major in one of the Letters & Science
disciplines, or pursue pre-professional studies in business, engineering,
pre-medicine, education or other fields, Letters & Science
educational and research programs in the physical sciences, math,
foreign languages, and English are critical to their future success.
Letters & Science is proud of its outstanding teachers, whose
influence on students continues for years after graduation.
Letters & Science is both a liberal arts college and a center
of world-class research,
from the freshman classroom to faculty projects. The college ranks
third among UW-Madison colleges for research grant awards. Discoveries
by the college's faculty, staff, and students make headlines on
a regular basis.
