Committee on Academic Staff Issues

Results of Academic Staff Survey (2005)

In the spring of 2005, CASI sponsored an online survey for academic staff to gauge what issues might need to be addressed within our work on the committee. Among the topics covered were issues of job security, promotion, climate, career advancement, and merit.

Some notable observations:

  • 74% felt they were either very significantly or significantly involved of the mission of their department. (Question 8)
  • 57% of those responding contributed to program development in their unit. (Question 10B)
  • Question 16 seemed to indicate that there is room for improvement in areas of professional development and career advancement.
  • 36.7% of respondents indicated that they had not had a performance review in the past year, 28% had not had one in the past three years, and 44% had no indication of performance review policy in their department. (Question 17)
  • 54% were unfamiliar or neutral with the L&S CASI. (Question 19)

How we hope to use this information

  • Performance Reviews procedures vary across the college by department. As part of a hiring package, people should receive a copy of their department's performance review guidelines. A sub-committee of the L&S CASI was convened and we reviewed statements on file with South Hall. The sub-committee then compiled into a representative performance review template. Once this template has been approved, we hope to publish it to our site. It is hoped that departments can use this to simplify the process of performance reviews and make a consistent process for this across the College.
  • Many people indicated that the career advancement and promotion process was not understood. In order to facilitate understanding, we hope to organize a session for this topic in the fall of 2007. We hope this may be the first in a series of informational meetings to address issues of concern identified in this survey.
  • The functions of the L&S CASI are unknown to a large percentage of Academic Staff. We hope, though the Dean's Spring and Fall Listening Sessions and informational tables at benefits events to spread word of our efforts and learn more of what is of interest to Academic Staff.
