Alliances for Graduate Education
and the Professoriate
What is the NSF AGEP/SBES Program?
The National Science Foundation's Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Program is intended to increase significantly the number of domestic students receiving doctoral degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences (SBES), with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders). Particular emphasis is placed on increasing the number of students of color who complete the Ph.D. and enter the professoriate in SBES disciplines.
Specific objectives of the AGEP program are (1) to develop and implement innovative models for recruiting, mentoring, and retaining minority students in SBES doctoral programs, and (2) to develop effective strategies for identifying and supporting under-represented minorities who want to pursue academic careers.
The schools listed below comprise the Northwestern Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate SBES Program. The AGEP program recruits, supports and mentors underrepresented minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in social, behavioral and economic science disciplines at alliance institutions. The seven Northwestern AGEP/SBES universities have long-standing traditions of academic excellence in doctoral education and research, outstanding Ph.D. programs in SBES disciplines, and an unwavering commitment to fostering diversity.
