The
College of Letters & Science is the heart of UW–Madison.
The largest college in the university, we enroll over half of
all UW–Madison students. We also provide the foundation
courses in science, math, languages, and literature for all undergraduate
programs across campus. Our 21,000 students, 3,000 faculty and
staff, and 170,000 living alumni form a tradition of liberal arts
excellence and achievement that dates back over 100 years.
Letters & Science also is UW–Madison’s focal point
of research in disciplines from arts and humanities to social,
mathematical, natural, and physical sciences. Our college administers
the third highest amount of competitive research grants on campus,
and contributes a significant portion
of the grants administered through the Graduate
School. Our research translates into service to the people of
Wisconsin, hands-on research opportunities for undergraduates,
top tier graduate training programs, and news-making discoveries
by faculty, staff, and students.
Letters & Science is where a UW–Madison education begins
and matures; where ambitions and goals are shaped; and where critical
thinkers are challenged and future leaders are trained. To ensure
that our students emerge from the college with the knowledge,
skills, and experiences they will need to
thrive in the global workplace and community, we have established
two priorities for the coming years:
To
strengthen undergraduate education inside and outside the classroom,
and increasing scholarship support so that all students can
take advantage of these opportunities.
To
build on our research pre-eminence by protecting our status
as one of the world’s leading research universities and
the college’s role as the UW–Madison’s largest
research unit. We can accomplish this by recruiting and retaining
top faculty in all fields and by exposing students to these
leading scholars, so that students experience first-hand how
knowledge is created.
We
welcome all alumni and friends as partners
in our endeavors. Such partnerships have
been a vital element of the excellence that we
have achieved more than a century as a college.
Continued partnership and support will
help us achieve ambitious goals and create a
promising future for the next generations.
