Our Faculty
There are more than 800 tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the College of Letters & Science, including hundreds of research staff, instructors and adjunct faculty members.
Our instructors contribute to a vibrant community of interdisciplinary teaching, research and public service.
Annually, our faculty garner top awards, professorships and fellowships while teaching more than 650,000 credit hours, instructing approximately half of all students at UW-Madison.
The College is committed to retaining the highest caliber faculty and the dean employs several tools to reward top talent.
Sustaining and building an outstanding faculty
Faculty Fellows Program
The L&S Faculty Fellows Program is an innovative model that retains young faculty members who are lured away by outside offers at peer institutions. The Faculty Fellows Program provides $10,000 annually over five years to meritorious faculty to use in their research, teaching and public service.
The program was spearheaded by the L&S Board of Visitors and piloted in 2007. Since then, the program has achieved a 100% retention rate for all 28 Faculty Fellows. It is now being used at a model across UW-Madison to retain top faculty and reward rising stars.
