How Gifts Help Recruit & Retain Outstanding Faculty

The College of Letters and Science is internationally respected for the caliber of its 800 member faculty.

But in today’s competitive environment, reputation attracts attention, and the College’s best faculty regularly receive offers.  On average, L&S faculty earn $21,000 less than their peers making them ideal targets to be “picked off” by competing institutions, who are sometimes our peers and sometimes less prestigious.

Losing a faculty member directly affects the College’s ability to teach undergraduates, acquire federal funding, provide research and lab experience, and sustain jobs in the state of Wisconsin.

To help stem the tide of faculty departures, in 2007 the College implemented the innovative Faculty Fellows Program, thanks to the generosity of donors. This program uses private support to recognize outstanding recently-tenured faculty and to provide them with $50,000 in research funds to be used over a five-year period.

In addition to the faculty fellowships, the College fosters lasting allegiance by bestowing the Leon D. Epstein Distinguished Faculty Research Award and the Phillip R. Certain Award.

Both quantitative and qualitative data indicate that the L&S Faculty Fellows Program has been a resounding success in meeting the goal of faculty retention.

Since the inception of the program, faculty fellowships have been granted to 28 professors. In addition, Epstein Awards have been granted three professors and the Certain award to two professors.

To date, of the 33 recipients of faculty fellowships, Epstein Awards, and Certain award, a full one hundred percent remain on the faculty of the College of Letters & Science.
