How Your Gifts Help Undergraduates
Undergraduate education is at the heart of our teaching, research and public service mission. L&S is the guardian of many campuswide initiatives, programs and extracurricular activities in undergraduate education.
We are also the guardian of the University's foundational coursework that allows students to pursue degrees in Agriculture, Business, Education, Engineering and more.
Many small gifts to the Letters & Science Annual Fund make a real difference on campus for our students and for all students at UW-Madison.
- Support from alumni and friends helped the College launch a 'borderless' English class – “The Global Spread of English” – with ALHOSN University in Abu Dhabi in fall 2011. This unique partnership connects students across the world through video technology under the guidance of English Professor Jane Zuengler, L&S technical staff and Dr. Hassan Belhiah (MA’98, PhD’05), a professor at ALHOSN University.
- Gifts from alumni and friends help support the Office of Service Learning and Community Based Research that gets students involved in community service work. In Summer 2011, one student started a Fishing Club in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to introduce Hispanic youth to a state honored tradition: fishing! Read more...
- Using flexible funds, Dean Gary Sandefur provides annual funding to students organizations including the National Model United Nations team, the Forensics Team and the Mock Trial Team. This funding – sometimes the only financial support that students receive – allows students to travel to competitions and continue building their skills and professional networks.
- Private gifts allowed Letters & Science to co-sponsor GreenHouse, a unique residential learning community that opened in 2010. GreenHouse is home to more than 50 students who spend the year learning about sustainable solutions and environmental challenges through small, one-credit seminars taught by faculty. Read more...
