The College of Letters & Science works closely with the University of Wisconsin Foundation and its staff to identify opportunities for alumni and friends to support excellence and innovation in Letters & Science education and research programs, including:

Giving opportunities in departments and programs

Strategic Initiatives Fund:
This fund helps the College develop new strategies to meet its most pressing priorities, including research and service-learning opportunities for undergraduates, professorships to retain top faculty, laboratories for scientists who are joining the faculty, and innovative new programs like the Language Institute.

Letters & Science Scholarship Fund:
As tuition continues to rise, student requests for scholarship assistance are far exceeding the scholarship awards available. Contributions to this fund will help us meet our goal of ensuring that all bright and qualified individuals have access to a liberal arts education.

Graduate Student Support:
Graduate students are essential to our both our research programs and our undergraduate teaching. Each Letters and Science department seeks additional resources to recruit the best graduate students to its program. Having top-notch graduate students, in turn, helps us retain the best faculty and ensure high-quality teaching of undergraduates.

Faculty Professorships and Support Funds:

To maintain and enhance the stellar quality of our faculty, we seek additional resources to provide the professorships and research support funds necessary to compete against other top-tier universities in recruiting young scholars and retaining our finest mid-career and senior faculty members.

Also, the Phillip R. Certain Faculty Fund, established in honor of Dean Fhillip R. Certain on the occasion of his 2004 retirement. The fund is designed to help the Dean of Letters & Science respond to faculty retention challenges.
