VIII.5 Naming Facilities

Associate Vice Chancellor Darrell Bazzell's memo of May 14, 2003 (available here) seeks to further clarify policies for naming or dedicating facilities after individuals, an honor governed by Regent Policy 96-1. Included in this memo is a clarification of policies related to calling for the Dean's and Chancellor's approval for facilities in honor of individuals. All such requests - including requests to name part of a facility (e.g., rooms, labs, wings, etc.) - require approval by the Dean and the Chancellor; furthermore, Regent approval is required for naming an entire facility. The current Room Naming Policy is available on this site.

Please refer to the Facility Naming Process flow chart for further information about these processes. A summary of the steps is provided here, based on the campus process described in Darrell Bazzell's memo, and adjusted to include the L&S approval process:

  1. Originating department proposes name for facility via a request addressed to the Dean.
  2. The Dean presents the proposal to the L&S Academic Planning Council for approval.
  3. Once approved, the request is forwarded with the Dean's endorsement to the Campus Planning Committee.
  4. The Campus Planning Commitee forwards approved requests to the Chancellor. (Room naming will be advanced through the Space and Remodeling Policies Committee to the Vice Chancellor for Administration.)
  5. Please note that existing campus procedures also require that all fundraising efforts tied to proposed naming opportunities be approved by the Chancellor. We expect a detailed “naming opportunities” list to be prepared before fundraising approval can be given. Contact the Space Management Office for assistance and coordination throughout the naming processes. Staff will assist in preparing the appropriate documentation and help guide requests through the appropriate committees for the Chancellor’s approval.
