IV.7 REVIEW OF TENURED FACULTY Under legislation adopted by the Faculty Senate (Faculty Document 1001b), each department was required to develop a policy for review of tenured faculty and begin its implementation during the 1993-94 academic year. Such reviews, to be linked to the merit process, are intended to "assess periodically each faculty member's activities and performance, in accordance with the mission of the department, college, and institution in such a way as to determine that the faculty member is meeting his or her obligations to the university and the State of Wisconsin." Departmental plans are to be on file in the Dean's office. Reviews must occur at least once every five years for all tenured faculty (with a one-year delay possible if the faculty member is on leave or expected to be reviewed for promotion to full professor in the following year), and may be linked to the annual merit review or promotion or other reviews such as review for a nomination to a named professorship. Required elements of the review are enumerated in the faculty legislation, and include both qualitative and quantitative information; the review should be prospective as well as retrospective. The faculty member is to receive a written summary of the review and have the opportunity to prepare a written response; materials used in the review are expected to become a part of the faculty member's permanent personnel file. At the end of the academic year, the department is required to submit to the dean a summary listing the names of the faculty members reviewed in that year and the outcome of those reviews. Questions should be directed to the appropriate academic Associate Dean. NC August 2006 |
