I.2 LETTERS AND SCIENCE ACADEMIC PLANNING COUNCIL

Membership

The L&S Academic Planning Council advises the Dean on key program, curricular and fiscal matters, and thus plays an important role in College governance activities.  This council is composed of six members elected from the L&S faculty; two academic staff members elected by the L&S academic staff; and the Dean.  Two faculty members are elected from each of the three major divisions of the College.  One academic staff member is elected from among the instructional staff, and the other is elected from among the research staff.  The Dean, who chairs the council, has also appointed two ex officio members: an appointee from the Classified Staff Issues Committee, and the Chair of the L&S Curriculum Committee.  The L&S Associate Deans and several other members of L&S Administration attend Council meetings to advise the elected members should the need arise. Assistant Dean Elaine Klein works with Dean Sandefur to coordinate APC business. (Please consult the APC Operating Procedures for more detailed information.)

The 2007-2008 Academic Planning Council members are:

Debby Bushey, L&S Student Academic Affairs (ex officio, Classified Staff Issues Committee Appointee)
Maria Cancian, School of Social Work and LaFollette School of Public Policy
David Canon, Political Science
Barbara Clayton, Theatre and Drama

Diana Frantzen, Spanish and Portuguese (ex officio, Chair of L&S Curriculum Committee)

Jeremi Suri, History (appointed pro tem, Semester I, 2007-2008)
John Wright, Chemistry
Gary Sandefur (chair), Dean

To be elected or appointed:

  • Classified Staff Issues Committee appointee (ex officio)
  • Faculty, Humanities (elected)
  • Academic Staff, Instructional (elected)

Council Business

The Academic Planning Council has been instrumental in advising the Dean about budgetary and strategic planning in the College.  Another key responsibility of the council is to consider Academic Program Reviews conducted every ten years. (For more information about program reviews, see Chapter V.4, Academic Program Review). The council is the college-level governance body that confers with the dean on matters related to the assessment of student learning in the college. The APC considers and advises the dean and departments regarding proposals to create or delete academic programs (e.g., majors, certificates, PhD minors) or L&S centers or institutes. In general, these and other proposals regarding the academic mission and resources of the college require APC approval prior to submission for campus-level approval.

Consultation about APC business is strongly encouraged. Please contact your Academic Associate Dean, refer to the Paper and Request Flowchart, or contact Assistant Dean Elaine Klein (kleine@ls.admin.wisc.edu) for more information.

Annual Reports

Many of the council's activities are discussed in various annual reports submitted by the Dean to the L&S Senate and to the Provost. For more information about the council's work, please feel free to consult any of the following documents:

Meetings

The L&S Academic Planning Council meets weekly during Spring and Fall terms. Meetings are held on Wednesday afternoons, from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m., in the Dean's Conference Room (102 South Hall).

Deadlines

To allow for agenda planning and review of materials prior to distribution, the deadline for submission of agenda items ordinarily falls two weeks prior to the meeting. Please note, however, that proposals that come before the council generally touch upon complex issues and often require research and consultation within L&S administration and, in some cases, at the campus level. If additional consultation is needed, presentation to the APC will be delayed until questions are satisfied and issues resolved.
