VII. 3. State Relations

The University of Wisconsin —Madison and its colleges are challenged to explain their function and value to and to enhance relationships with the State of Wisconsin and its legislative bodies. The Assistant Dean for Communications and College Relations serves as a member of the university’s External Relations Council, which coordinates and plans such activities on behalf of UW— Madison . The director also consults with the assistant to the chancellor for state relations.

At the college level, the Assistant Dean for Communications and College Relations prepares supporting data and documents to educate Wisconsin citizens and elected officials about the college and for use by the Dean of Letters & Science and others in discussions and communications related to the state budget.

The director also cooperates with the university and the Wisconsin Alumni Association to carry out special initiatives related to the state budget and assists the University Communications staff in responding to media queries regarding state budget issues at the college level. In 2003, the Office of Communications and College Relations initiated new programs to increase the college’s visibility in local newspapers and with state legislators by improving communications regarding the achievements of students from local communities.
