VI.1 LETTERS AND SCIENCE STUDENT ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Letters and Science Student Academic Affairs (L&S SAA) supports students in realizing both their academic and personal potential, attaining their undergraduate degrees, and fulfilling their human promise as individuals as well as citizens of a global community, within the framework of a liberal arts education.

In order to accomplish the above, L&S SAA provides the following:

  • Academic and career advising, specializing in issues of transition
  • Programs and services to support under-represented students
  • Academic enrichment programs
  • Support for undergraduate students to help them successfully navigate through the degree requirements for the College of Letters and Science

Specific units include the following:

  • Academic Advancement Program (AAP), directed by Assistant Dean DeVon Wilson, provides studeht who have not traditionally had access to higher education, with academic advising, tutoring, and academic enrichment services.
  • Letters and Science Advising Service (LSAS) , directed by Assistant Dean Tony Garcia, provides academic advising for students who have decided on a specific major in the College of Letters and Science. LSAS is now located in Bascom Hall. Students affiliated with this advising unit should get guidance from the reception desk in room 70 Bascom Hall.
  • Letters and Science Career Services, directed by Leslie Kohlberg, is located in the Middleton Building at 1305 Linden Drive, Suite 205. Career Services provides long-term career planning for students.
  • Cross-College Advising Services (CCAS), located in Room 10, Ingraham Hall. CCAS, a campus-wide program directed by Assistant Dean Timothy Walsh, provides advising assistance for students undecided about their majors and academic direction.
  • First-Year Interest Groups (FIGs), directed by Assistant Dean Greg Smith, provides a learning/living community for first-year students that enhances learning by fostering academic and social connections.
  • The Policy Group and General Deans' Staff , which is now part of the Letters and Science Advising Services, serves students, faculty, staff, and the larger university community by fairly and accurately administering, developing, interpreting, and making appropriate exceptions to college policy; disseminating information about College policy and procedures; maintaining the L&S portion of the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS); and maintaining records of students in the College.
  • Pathways to Excellence Student Academic Services programs provide advising, advocacy, and cultural programming for students of color in the college.  Pathways has a strong commitment to building community and is dedicated to training and nurturing student leaders.  By creating opportunities for students to excel, Pathways seeks to demonstrate that undergraduates can accomplish extraordinary things if given the opportunity.  Pathways consists of the following programs and services:
    • African American Student Academic Services (AASAS), a campus-wide program coordinated by Darren Martin, provides support services, advising, and support for cultural programming and student organizations serving African and African American students.
    • American Indian Student Academic Services (AISAS), a campus-wide program coordinated by Aaron Bird Bear, provides advice, referrals to campus resources, connections with tribes, assistance to American Indian student associations, and linkages to the American Indian Studies program.
    • Bradley Learning Community, coordinated by Professor Susan Brantly.  As an all-first-year student residence hall, the Bradley Learning Community promotes a successful transition from high school to college life.
    • Chadbourne Residential College, directed by Professor Jo Ellen Fair and Associate Director Lisa Landreman, brings the college learning experience into the everyday lives of its residents, bridging the formal world of the classroom with the informal world of the residential college.
    • Chicano/a and Latino/a Student Academic Services, a campus-wide program coordinated by Miguel Rosales, provides advising, campus resources, and support to Chicano/a and Latino/a students and organization.
    • Letters and Science Scholarships, a college-wide program coordinated by E. Alison Rice, awards scholarships each year to a highly selective group of new first-year students and outstanding continuing students in Letters and Science.
    • Southeast Asian American Student Academic Services (SEAASAS), a campus-wide program coordinated by Pao Thao, provides advising and career planning and assists Southeast Asian American student organizations.
    • Summer Collegiate Experience (SCE), a campus-wide program coordinated by Miguel Rosales, provides a "jump start" for admitted first-year students of color.
    • Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URS), a campus-wide program coordinated by Assistant Dean Svetlana T. Karpe, provides research experiences for first- and second-year students.
    • The Undergraduate Writing Fellows, co-sponsored by the Writing Center and Pathways to Excellence, is housed in the English Department.  This program prepares selected students from a range of majors (not just honors students) to serve as peer writing tutors in courses across the curriculum.  By forging teaching partnerships between Fellows and professors, the program provides writing assistance in courses and creates new opportunities for intellectual exchange among undergraduates and faculty.
