VI.10 DEGREE AUDIT REPORTING SYSTEM

The Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) is an automated degree audit that reports a student's progress toward completion of academic requirements in Letters and Science.  DARS analyzes a student's courses for application to College and major requirements and is the document of record for all L&S majors (except Music-related programs).  The Registrar's Office uses DARS to confirm completion of all requirements for the major and degree; a student cannot graduate without a DARS that shows all requirements complete.  Hence, a recent DARS audit is an essential tool for planning registration and reporting completion of requirements.

Exceptions can be made to DARS for both College and major requirements for individual students.  A typical exception request is to apply a course toward a major requirement that does not universally apply.  Exceptions should be rare.  In cases where an exception is warranted, a DARS exception form should be sent to Letters and Science Student Academic Affairs, Room 70 Bascom Hall.  When the intent is to accept a course in a requirement for all students, please use the DARS exception form and indicate that the added course applies to "any student."

It is important that each academic department appoint one DARS coordinator; normally, this is the undergraduate advisor.  This person appointed as DARS coordinator should have a good understanding of the major curriculum and course inventory.  Changes to requirements, the addition of applicable courses, and concerns about how DARS reports major requirements should be communicated to the liaison Dean and the DARS Dean in a timely manner to ensure the accuracy of the degree audit.  Please notify Student Academic Affairs if your DARS coordinator changes.

Mike Pflieger is the DARS Assistant Dean responsible for coding DARS for Letters and Science.  He is available for individual or group training, troubleshooting, and questions regarding DARS and exceptions.  He can be reached at 262-2007 or mjpflieger@wisc.edu.

Wanda Ashman codes DARS for L&S and is available for questions and troubleshooting at 265-0350 or washman@lssaa.wisc.edu.
