VI.12 ACCOMMODATION OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS IN MAKING UP EXAMS/ASSIGNMENTS

The Academic Calendar is available at http://www.secfac.wisc.edu/acadcal/index.htm.

UWS 22 holds that "students' sincerely held religious beliefs shall be reasonably accommodated with respect to scheduling all examinations and other academic requirements." Exams and requirements include any course requirement made by the instructor that will be considered in the course. For the fall 2007 semester the policy specifically identifies Rosh Hashanah (Tuesday, 30 September 2008) and Yom Kippur (Thursday, 10 October 2008) as such days. Please note that Jewish holidays and observances begin at sunset on the evening preceding the given date and some holidays are celebrated over more than one day. Please mark these days on your calendar and do not schedule mandatory exercises on these dates.

Students must notify the course instructor within the first three weeks of the semester of the specific dates conflicting with an exam or assignment. Students have been notified of this rule in the Timetable and course catalog. Instructors are also strongly encouraged to make students aware of this policy within the first week of the semester/term.

The claim of a religious conflict should be accepted at face value. A great variety of valid claims exist for religious groups and there is no practical, dignified, and legal means to assess the validity of individual claims. As our campus becomes increasingly multicultural, there are bound to be conflicts between mandatory academic requirements and religious observances other than those noted above. A listing, though not exhaustive, is available on-line at www.interfaithcalendar.org. A copy of this listing can be obtained from the Secretary of the Faculty's Office, 133 Bascom.

The Offices of the Provost and of the Dean of Students suggest three guidelines:

  1. Instructors are not obliged to schedule makeups before the regularly scheduled requirements.
  2. Within the first three weeks of class, the student must notify the instructor of the specific days or dates on which he or she will request relief. Since new students may not fully understand the necessity of the timing of this request, flexibility is urged in this accommodation.
  3. It is understood that the instructor may set reasonable limits on a total number of days claimed by any one student.
