VI.31 DISTINCTION IN THE MAJOR AND THESIS OF DISTINCTION Students not earning the Honors Degree qualify for these two awards. The provisions for these awards are contained in L&S Faculty Document 131. The award Distinction in the Major is granted at graduation, upon the recommendation of the department to the Dean, to any student who has done superior work in his or her major and who has passed a comprehensive examination on that work. Distinction in the Major may be granted without a comprehensive examination for a student who has a 3.5 grade point average in the major, and who has successfully completed special "work" as prescribed by his or her department. The award is noted on the transcript. The award Thesis of Distinction is granted for an exceptionally good or original thesis, without consideration of the student's record in other work. The chair of the major department will appoint a committee of at least two members (including the thesis advisor) to read the thesis, and will recommend to the Dean the granting of this award where this seems appropriate. Such theses will be retained in the department. The award is noted on the transcript. Some departments have more stringent criteria for the Distinction in the Major award. If this is true for your department, the criteria used should be sent along with the list of names to the Dean. Indicate the exact title of the thesis for students who are to be awarded a Thesis of Distinction. Last reviewed : August 2006 |
