COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE POLICY ON LECTURERS
Revised 10/31/06

All lecturers in Letters and Science will be hired as Associate Lecturers unless they have completed eight semesters of teaching (experience must be gained as a lecturer or equivalent or higher, e.g. assistant professor; experience as a TA does not count toward the eight semesters). Please note that faculty members from other institutions may not be hired as lecturers at UW-Madison; departments seeking to hire a member of the faculty of another institution should request to do so under a visiting faculty title at an appropriate percentage and rate.

Associate Lecturers without eight semesters of teaching experience will be paid at one of the standard L&S minimum rates depending on the circumstances:

  • Inexperienced with no PhD
  • Experience with no PhD (experience = one semester of teaching as a lecturer)
  • Inexperienced with PhD
  • Experienced with PhD (experience = one semester as a lecturer)

Associate Lecturers attaining fixed-renewable status with fewer than eight semesters of teaching experience will retain the Associate Lecturer title until they have passed the eight-semester threshold. Associate Lecturers who have attained fixed-renewable status will be added to the following year’s budget and their salaries will henceforth be determined through the merit exercise.

Appointments as Associate Lecturers in summer sessions of at least 75% of 1/9 will count as one semester of teaching experience (although teaching in summer sessions does not count toward fixed-renewable status).

Fixed-renewable Associate Lecturers who have completed eight semesters of teaching as Associate Lecturers or the equivalent or higher must be reviewed for possible promotion to Lecturer. Experience gained as a lecturer outside UW-Madison will be counted toward the eight semesters. Experience need not be gained in consecutive semesters.

To be promoted to Lecturer, the Associate Lecturer must not only meet departmental and college criteria, but must also meet UW-Madison's prefix definition for Lecturer:

A lecturer at this level has the experience and academic qualifications needed to develop and teach a course(s) subject to broad guidelines describing the scope of the subject matter to be covered. However, the specific topics to be covered and the degree of topic emphasis is left to the independent judgment of the (no prefix) Lecturer. At this level, a Lecturer may be involved in various instruction related activities. These may include undergraduate advising, assisting in developing lab safety protocols, course scheduling, curriculum development, participating in departmental outreach programs, or other instructional activities.

Instructors will be hired as Lecturers if they have completed eight semesters of teaching as a lecturer or the equivalent or higher. Experience gained as a lecturer outside UW-Madison will be counted toward the eight semesters. Experience need not be gained in consecutive semesters. Lecturers who have not attained fixed-renewable status will be paid at one of the standard L&S minimum rates:

  • Experienced no PhD
  • Experienced with PhD

Lecturers who have completed at least six years (twelve semesters) of teaching at the lecturer level (experience gained as an Associate Lecturer does not count toward the twelve semesters), must be reviewed for possible promotion to Senior Lecturer.

To be promoted to Senior Lecturer, the Lecturer must not only meet departmental and college criteria, but must also meet UW-Madison’s prefix definition for Senior Lecturer:

A Senior Lecturer has extensive teaching experience and subject matter expertise in an academic discipline. A lecturer at this level has gained a reputation among his or her peers for demonstrably sustained superior contributions to teaching within a department or division. At this level, the independent selection, organization and development of course contents and instructional materials and approaches used is expected. Involvement with committees engaged in supporting this development is typical. However, the direct delivery of instruction is the primary responsibility of this title.

Instructors will be hired as Senior Lecturers if they have completed at least twenty semesters of teaching as a lecturer or the equivalent or higher. Experience gained as a lecturer outside UW-Madison will be counted toward the twenty semesters. Experience need not be gained in consecutive semesters. Instructors hired as Senior Lecturers will be paid at rates no less than the campus minimum.
