III.2    FACULTY RETENTION

Each year, approximately thirty L&S faculty receive outside offers to move to other institutions, usually universities. As might be expected, faculty receiving outside offers are typically among our most outstanding faculty. Thus, the normal response is a vigorous effort to retain them.  Since the role of the department chair in successful retention is central, we have developed a statement on faculty retention to help guide department chairs in this process, bringing together elements found in several other documents.

It is the nature of this document to be a work in progress.
The L&S Handbook is produced and hosted by the UW-Madison College of Letters and Science.

This document is updated annually each summer; however, significant additions may be made at any time. Departments
will be alerted to these when they are made. Most recent annual update: August 2006.
