III.6 ZERO DOLLAR AND HONORARY APPOINTMENTS Departments sometimes wish to provide a zero-dollar appointment for a scholar so the individual will have official University status and can use the libraries and other University facilities. The easiest and most common form of such affiliation is by means of appointment as an Honorary Fellow without salary (see sample letter). This appointment--which is not generally appropriate for those who are graduate students at another institution--requires prior Dean's approval and appointment through an Unclassified Appointment Add Form. Such affiliations do in fact represent appointments, even if unsalaried. Departments should consider carefully whether the affiliation is of mutual benefit; if so, a recommendation may be made to Joyce Helt. A current vita should accompany the initial request for appointment. Approval for periods of up to a year is routine when there is a mutual benefit from such a relationship. Reappointment of honorary fellows is possible. Requests for honorary fellows must include the following documentation:
Occasionally, a department will wish to designate a visitor as a visiting professor, visiting scientist, or other appropriate zero dollar unclassified title without salary. Such titles require prior Dean's office approval and an Unclassified Appointment Add Form, and the sponsoring department must demonstrate that there are good institutional reasons why this title is more appropriate than that of Honorary Fellow, which is specifically designed to provide for the affiliation of visiting scholars. We are careful not to appoint an individual to a higher visiting faculty title than he or she has held elsewhere. Questions about zero dollar honorary fellow and zero dollar visiting faculty titles should be referred to Joyce Helt (3-2312), questions about all other zero dollar appointments should be referred to Maggie Sullivan (3-2315).
