II.17 SPECIAL UNIVERSITY FUNDS
Below is a brief list of the more substantial University discretionary
funds derived from bequests and gift and grant sources that may be available
on application to assist in funding activities of interest to L&S
departments. Where not otherwise indicated, consult the Secretary of the
Faculty (2-3956) for the current chair of the particular committee and
more information about its funding policies. (See also Chapter IV, "Named
Professorships and Other Faculty Awards.")
- Anonymous Fund. Purpose: To enhance the artistic and cultural life of the University; one of the larger University trust funds; administered by a committee appointed by the Chancellor and chaired by the L&S Associate Dean for Humanities. Deadlines for proposals for the 2007-08 academic year are: September 21, 2007, November 9, 2007, February 1, 2008 and March 28, 2008. Please submit nine copies to 105 South Hall. Guidelines and the Cover Sheet for Anonymous Fund proposals are available in Microsoft Word format; the documents can be downloaded by selecting the following links: Guidelines, cover sheet (MS Word version; Wordperfect version). For more information about the Anonymous Fund, please contact Beth Quandt Hartzheim at 5-6351.
- Kemper K. Knapp Bequest Committee. Purpose: to support projects that
cross departmental lines and have an impact on the educational and cultural
life of the University community, particularly projects that benefit
undergraduates. Knapp funds are not often used for purposes that can
and should be supported elsewhere, such as from regular grants or research
funding, from fees charged for performances, or from the regular University
budget. Knapp grants are usually in the range of $500 to $5000.
The committee's annual call for proposals is usually issued in early
September. Contact Joe Farrenkopf in the Secretary of the Faculty's
office at 2-3956 for further information.
- Brittingham Trust. Purpose: to support general University objectives
with emphasis on projects in the arts and humanities, innovative or
experimental projects that subsequently may be funded through traditional
sources, interdisciplinary activities, and special projects that will
contribute to the University's knowledge base or provide distinctive
learning experiences for students or faculty. The bequest is controlled
by outside trustees mostly from the Brittingham family; grants are made
on a calendar year basis; applications should be directed to Casey Nagy
in the Chancellor's Office through the Dean by the end of August each
year for consideration by the Trustees each October. For further
information, contact Casey Nagy at 2-8967.
- Evjue Foundation. Purpose: to support programs and initiatives that
are broadly supportive of the university and city/county communities.
The Foundation is administered by an independent board of trustees.
Grants are made on a calendar year basis; applications should be directed
to Casey Nagy in the Chancellor's Office by the end of March each year
for consideration by the Board in May/June. Contact Casey Nagy at 2-8967
for further information.
- Graduate School Research Committee. Purpose: to support faculty research;
substantial funds derived from grants from the Wisconsin Alumni Research
Foundation (WARF); in addition to faculty research grants, the Committee
administers Romnes Research Fellowships for promising younger faculty
members, the WARF Mid-Career Award, and WARF Research Professorships
for outstanding senior faculty members; the Committee is appointed and
chaired by the Dean of the Graduate School; applications and nominations
are normally due in September for consideration for funding the following
year. For further information contact Steve Schwoegler at 2-8386.
- Lectures Committee. Purpose: to support lectures of interest to the
wider university community; the committee funds an honorarium of $300
or $600, plus travel and expenses according to State guidelines, and
publicizes the lecture. Committee policy limits funding to no
more than two lecture proposals per eligible unit per fiscal year, with
the provision that the proposed lectures cannot take place during the
same semester. Applicants should provide evidence of financial
support by the sponsoring and co-sponsoring units. The committee
chair is appointed by the University Committee and other members are
appointed by the chancellor, the divisional committees, ASEC and ASM.
Applications, reviewed monthly, are due by the 15th of each month. For
further information contact Joe Farrenkopf in the Secretary of the Faculty's
office at 2-3956.
- Brittingham Visiting Scholars. Purpose: provides funding to enrich
small upper-level courses or seminars for undergraduates by bringing
distinguished visitors to the classroom to introduce advanced students
to those working "in the field" who can contribute directly
to the knowledge and skills students will need upon graduation. Budgets
of up to $2,500 will be considered; proposals due in the Provost's office
in February each year. Contact Associate Vice Chancellor Virginia Sapiro
(2-5246) for further information.
- Cyril B. Nave Bequest. Purpose: to support faculty research and program
activities related to Latin America; administered by a committee appointed
by the Chancellor and chaired by the L&S Dean; applications may
be considered at any time.
- DoIT has revised what was once known as the Teaching and Leanning with Technology (TLT) and
WebWorks grants. The new programs are known as the "Innovation" and "Adaptation" programs. More information can be found online at http://engage.doit.wisc.edu/ . Both programs are similar to the programs they replaces. The "Innovation" program is intended to serve faculty who have
ideas for transforming teaching and learning through technology. Ideas can be submitted to the Faculty Advisory Group throughout the year. Through the "Adaptation" program, DoIT offers members of the faculty and instructional staff access to a new, easy-to-use
teaching/learning tool or technology and a small stipend of around $1000. They also receive 10-12 hours of individual technology consultation to become
familiar with the tool, set up a web page on which to use it, to customize or adapt the tool to serve their own needs, or similar projects.
