II.25 SUMMER SESSIONS

In many ways the Summer Sessions programs are a microcosm of the College as a whole. "Summer Sessions" indicate the various instructional programs carried out during the summer, including the Three-Week Early Session, the basic Eight-Week "regular" Summer Session, and a number of other sessions of varying lengths. The Summer Sessions budget is distinct from the College's academic year budget, and all Summer Sessions programming is established separately from that of the College's academic year activities. The programs are coordinated at the campus level by the Division of Continuing Studies; policy is established and administered by a council of school/college Summer Sessions Deans. Within L&S, the development of Summer Sessions programs is carried out by the departments in conjunction with a committee of the Academic Associate Deans and Associate Dean Nancy Westphal-Johnson who represents the College in the Summer Sessions Deans group. Funding through the Summer Sessions budget is directed toward instructional programs only, and only those departments having instructional summer programs of some size and complexity have summer chairs with fractional administrative appointments on the Summer Sessions payroll.

Instructor absences during the Summer Session
are not usually appropriate.

At many universities, summer instructional appointments are paid at a flat and lower rate unrelated to the individual's regular salary, and are predicated on the course enrolling a requisite number of students. In contrast, summer appointments here are based on the individual's current salary and L&S policy, once an instructor has been offered and accepted an appointment to teach in Summer Sessions, is to honor that commitment even if no students enroll and reassignment of duties is necessary. By the same token, the College also expects the instructor to honor the commitment unless arrangements are made that are satisfactory to both the department and the Dean's Office. Policies regarding absence from campus apply to those appointed to teach in Summer Sessions; because the period of instruction is shorter and therefore more intensive than in a semester it is unlikely the Dean will grant approval for absences that are at the faculty member's discretion during a period of Summer Sessions payrolling. Any requests should be made well in advance, and the instructor should not presume automatic approval by the Dean.
