II.26 SUMMER SERVICE

Service as department chair does not require service as chair of the departmental summer sessions.

L&S department chairs (and directors of large programs) receive a temporary base adjustment equivalent to 1/9th of their academic year salary when they become chair. This compensates them for their academic year duties, as well as for those occasions when they are called upon during the summer to provide service. At the end of a term as chair, the individual's base salary is reduced by the original temporary base adjustment plus average merit generated on the temporary base adjustment. Any merit awarded in excess of average merit is retained.

This base adjustment is not intended to provide salary to the individual serving as Summer Sessions chair (or to others providing administrative support during the summer), but rather to recognize the heavy and time-consuming responsibilities of the regular academic year chair. The departmental chair may serve as Summer Session chair, however, so long as total summer compensation does not exceed the campus limits. (see Chapter IV, "Overloads, Summer Appointments Greater than Two-Ninths, etc.").

Questions concerning payrolling of Summer Service should be directed to Sandra Englesby (263-2314 or englesby@ls.admin.wisc.edu).
