II.8 INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY Advanced technologies play a large role in many activities in L&S, including administration, advising, communications, instruction, and research. However, departments and programs in L&S have widely varying degrees of sophistication in the use of these technologies. The College recognizes the need to establish an infrastructure that will provide a basic level of competence in these areas which will improve efficiency and will encourage experimentation and innovation. The rate of development of this infrastructure is limited by College budgetary constraints. New Faculty Microcomputer Allocation The L&S computer allocation program for newly hired faculty is designed to provide a basic computer system and software for text processing and communications, to be used in the faculty member's office. The College will provide $1,500 towards the purchase of a basic computer system. This equipment remains the property of the College. The College normally supports only PC or Macintosh computer systems and will not support other platforms unless compelling justification is presented. If additional funds are obtained from other sources, the College will consider allowing equivalent funds to be applied towards specific research or instructional needs which require more powerful equipment. This program is not intended to provide for sophisticated research or instructional equipment. More specialized computer equipment for new faculty can be obtained through grant funds such as those from the Graduate School Research Committee. Departments also have access to capital funds through the annual indirect cost capital exercise. Special technology needs of faculty members can be considered within the department priorities at that time, or within the department's base capital budget. Ethernet Infrastructure L&S will provide ethernet connectivity up to the wall jack for all faculty and permanent staff members in buildings and offices which are assigned to L&S departments. This means that the College will make sure there is adequate hub capacity to accommodate these needs in L&S buildings. In addition, the ongoing costs associated with this access are normally covered by the College. The College is not able to guarantee ethernet connectivity in general assignment classrooms. L&S Learning Support Services L&S Learning Support Services (LSS) is assists departments in meeting their instructional objectives by providing equipment, labs, training, and services using current educational technology. Services provided by LSS are described in greater detail in section VIII.1. |
