Welcome to the 2008-2009 edition of the L&S Handbook

First published in 1981, the Handbook has been updated periodically since that time.  In each edition, we try to increase the usefulness of this day-to-day guide for departmental chairs, program directors, administrators, faculty and staff. This online edition debuted in 2000-2001, and this technology affords us the opportunity to share this information even more widely. Although we are able to update items when the need arises, the usual cycle for revision falls over the summer months, when the demands of the Fall/Spring semesters abate.

This version of the Handbook supercedes all previous paper publications.   We ask that users consult the Handbook before contacting colleagues in L&S Administration - often, the answers you seek have already been addressed here.

Changes to this year's edition of the Handbook are relatively minor;
please refer to our "What's New?" page for details.

We will continue to work to ensure that the information included in this handbook is as accurate as possible, and will alert Department Chairs and Administrators of substantive revisions as they are made.  If you find errors in this document, or see aspects that can be improved, please let us know what they are.  We are always interested in your suggestions and comments; please direct them to Elaine Klein (klein@ls.admin.wisc.edu).
