Gift Funds
UW Foundation
The UW Foundation is the entity that handles gifts and donations for UW-Madison. The Foundation is separate from the University but serves UW-Madison.
Departments have been assigned a development officer who can assist departments with fund raising. For questions about development, please contact the Office of Advancement.
The Foundation holds gift funds that can be accessed by using a Foundation Check Request. These checks can pay vendors directly, or transfer money from the Foundation to the UW. Foundation funds are deposited into 233- accounts.
233- Accounts
233- accounts are UW-Madison gift accounts that receive funds from UW Foundation or directly from donors. These accounts are non-sponsored and often are discretionary, although some 233- accounts are created with a specific purpose. These accounts typically have no end date and can be routinely refreshed with funds from departmental Foundation funds.
By order of the Provost's office, 233- account overdrafts should be cleared quarterly.
Trust Funds
Trust funds are managed by UW System Trust Funds. These accounts are typically quite flexible, but can have a specific purpose. Trust funds earn interest that can be spent. Trust funds have three types of funds: short term, intermediate, and long term. Short term cash is available for spending and shows in WISDM under the matching 161- account. Intermediate funds are spendable, but do not show in WISDM. Long term funds are the investment principal that earns the interest. Long term funds cannot be spent.
161- Accounts
161- accounts are trust funds, and are linked to the UW System Trust Fund accounting system; for these 161- accounts, WISDM will show only the short term cash balances.
